According to initial reports, a silver sedan traveling in the HOV lane attempted to merge left into a general‑purpose lane when it struck the side of a blue pickup truck. The force of the collision sent both vehicles into the barrier wall. The sedan’s driver, a 28‑year‑old man from Decatur, sustained neck and shoulder injuries, as well as cuts to his face from broken glass. He was extricated by the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department and rushed by Grady EMS to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition. The pickup truck driver, a 42‑year‑old Atlanta woman, was treated on scene for minor abrasions and whiplash and was later cleared to leave.

The crash led to the closure of the HOV lane and part of the left lane for over an hour, during which time investigators documented the scene and wrecker operators removed the vehicles. Authorities also inspected the area for fluid spills and debris. As a result, southbound traffic on I‑75/85 was delayed for several miles, with backups stretching to I‑20. The lanes were reopened around 9:45 a.m., but residual congestion remained.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, with preliminary findings suggesting the sedan driver failed to properly check for traffic before merging into the adjacent lane. No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing. Police remind drivers to always signal and check mirrors before changing lanes, especially in busy downtown areas.

Our thoughts are with those injured in this morning’s I‑75/85 crash as they recover from their injuries.
