Cook County, GA – Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision on I-75/MM 49 Claims One Life
Cook County, GA (September 2, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on I-75 northbound in Cook County just after midnight on Sunday, September 1st, resulting in a fatality and serious injuries. The crash took place near mile marker 49, involving a Hyundai Kona and a Chevrolet Corvette. According to Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Trooper 1st Class Kyle Duke, the collision occurred at around 12:55 a.m. The Corvette, which was reportedly traveling at high speed, struck the Hyundai Kona, causing it to catch fire. Tragically, the driver of the Hyundai, identified as 22-year-old Janell Mitchell of Jacksonville, was unable to escape the burning vehicle and succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The driver of the Corvette sustained severe injuries and was initially transported to Tift Regional Medical Center for emergency treatment. Due to the extent of his injuries, he was later transferred to Augusta Hospital for further care. GSP officials have indicated that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, with charges pending against the Corvette driver. The incident is currently under investigation by GSP’s Specialized Crash Reconstruction Team.
