Pedestrian Crashes on Michigan Highways
Highways are among the most dangerous places for pedestrians, and incidents like the recent fatal crash on I-75 in Oakland County underscore just how fast tragedy can strike. Michigan freeways, especially those under construction or reduced visibility conditions, are not designed for pedestrians, yet people find themselves exposed after breakdowns, crashes, or emergencies.
According to the Michigan State Police, hundreds of pedestrian-related crashes occur on or near highways every year. Many involve people who exited their vehicles after an accident or mechanical failure. While the instinct to get out and inspect the damage is natural, it can be a deadly choice on high-speed roads. In these high-pressure moments, staying inside the vehicle, especially if it’s on the highway, can be the safer option, unless it’s smoking or on fire.
Victims of pedestrian crashes or their families may be entitled to compensation for:
- Medical expenses or funeral costs
- Lost wages or loss of future income
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional distress or loss of companionship
