Laurel Co, KY – Fatal Crash on I-75 Near MM 46

Laurel Co, KY (January 16, 2026) – A deadly crash happened on Tuesday, January 13, on Interstate 75 in Laurel County, according to officials. The collision occurred around 3 a.m. near mile marker 46.

Investigators said a Nissan Altima rear-ended a tractor-trailer that was traveling southbound in the middle lane. The car’s driver, 30-year-old William Darnell of Corbin, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tractor-trailer driver, 54-year-old Steven Patrick Jones of Xenia, Ohio, did not report injuries. Medical staff took him to a local hospital for blood testing and medical clearance. Deputies charged Jones with DUI, and officials said more charges may follow depending on the results and the ongoing review.

Laurel County Sheriff’s Office representatives said the cause of the crash is still unclear. Officials continue working to determine what led to the collision, and the investigation remains active.
