Laurel Co, KY – Fatal Crash on I-75 S Near MM 46
Laurel Co, KY (January 15, 2026) – A deadly crash on southbound I-75 claimed one life early Tuesday morning in Laurel County.
The crash occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 13, near mile marker 46. Laurel County Sheriff’s Office deputies said a Nissan Altima struck the rear of a tractor-trailer traveling southbound in the middle lane.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, 54-year-old Steven Patrick Jones of Xenia, Ohio, was not injured. Deputies transported him to a local hospital for medical clearance and blood testing. Investigators later charged Jones with DUI. Authorities stated that additional charges remain possible pending further results.
The car’s driver, identified as 30-year-old William Darnell of Corbin, was the sole occupant of the Nissan. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials said investigators have not determined why the Altima struck the trailer. Deputies are still examining whether speed, distraction, or other factors played a role. The area where the crash occurred includes a hill and a curve, which deputies said can affect driver awareness, especially around large trucks.
The crash remains under active investigation as deputies review evidence and test results. Our thoughts are with Mr. Darnell’s family and loved ones during this painful time.
After any serious crash, seeking immediate medical care is critical, even when injuries are not obvious. Prompt care can document injuries and protect long-term health.
